Acts 1:5 (NIV) 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
These are some of the amazing words of Jesus. Our tendency though, is to put the emphasis on the first part of the sentence, rather than the last part. Now, don’t take that wrong, the whole sentence is important, and as a church, we are still celebrating with those who were just recently “baptized with water.”
However, it is important to remember that our faith journeys do not start when we accept Jesus as our Saviour, or even when we are baptized. No, the journey continues, and it does so as we experience the presence and the work of the Holy Spirit in and through us. But, “The Holy Spirit … Who Is He?
Today, we begin a series to consider that very question. Well, that question and more. For as we, over the next few weeks, consider some of the attributes of the Holy Spirit that are mentioned in the Bible, we are going to look not only at who the Holy Spirit is, but also why we need Him, and the role He plays in our spiritual journey and lives. Today we begin by looking at Him in the role of our Advocate (or as some translations put it, our Helper).
This description we began with some of the words of Jesus, let’s end with some of the same …
John 14:15-17 (NLT) 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.
